of choirs and pipe organ

I was at the Esplanade last night for THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS concert. The choirs that sang was a combination of MGS and CHIJ gals. So all female voices. The entire evening was accompanied by the Pipe Organ.

I loved the arrangements and the voicings.

The singing was absolute beautiful. The phrasing.....that was one thing that I learnt. You know how our choir keeps insisting that we end our 't' and 'k' and 's'.....This choir ended the phrases especially the end to verses and choruses.....with the voices sustained in mid-air.....and it felt like a wave of vocal reverb is hurled across the audience. That is SOOOOO magical.

Vocal technique showed through....
These were school kids. But hey, Jennifer Tham is an award GOLD standard conductor. I could see from where I was sitting in the audience the facial cues she gave to the kids.

She tried to make the sopranoes soar....
Sometimes the kids succeed, sometimes they did not deliver.....well it is HARD to start a phrase on a very high note!

Singing non-legato..
Sometimes non-legato singing is very effective on faster, more upbeat pieces. Or pieces with a jazzy feel. Plus feel stresses and non-stresses....

****
Remember those school days when the class will stand up and greet chinese teachers with....
l-a-o......s-h-i.....zh-a-o....a-n............like slippers dragged across the floor.

Today, SCC sounded like that.
