Why is the Buddha smiling?
(excerpt .....boxing the shadow of self-importance)
Let's say you're sitting in the theatre when someone behind you decides to unwrap a candy bar. The sound of the crackling cellophane threatens to drown out the hero's tender words up on the screen. What can patience do just then as the list of insulting remarks begins running through your head? After all you shelled out your hard-earned cash to watch the show. Don't you have every right to watch the film in peace? Doesn't this numbskull realize the racket he's making? No one of your intelligence would ever be so oblivious. Why can't you just rid the world of all candy-crunching fools?
But try looking a little more closely at this dilemma. Did this fellow deliberately set out to get your goat? Probably not. Then who got the goat? Not the fellow with the candy, exactly. No. but the blame is already drawing uncomfortably close to the real goat-getter. In fact, I suspect he's sitting in my seat. Certainly, you have every right to ask for quiet in the theater. It's a commonly accepted convention. But next time, try leaving the goat at home.
