5th sunday of lent

Jerusalem....

It is only the opening recitative section that I hear punctuated organ chords. Alternatively it could be played with harpsichord chords.
That sad section by males, I hear a soulful oboe with quiet strings.
In the 6/8 section, I hear the strings come in.....
The 3 hossanahs punctuated by organ chords again......with timpanni rolls
Finally the coda ends dramatically with tutti, drum rolls!
Now I need 4 pair of hands to do all that.

Actually I am conducting a 2 session workshop on The Art of listening to piano teachers. And I have been drumming it in to music teachers as well as to my own students.....the music MUST start from within. If you only hear the sound after the fingers have plonked into the keys....that is wayyyyyyyyy too late already.

Then again, how many people here can hear what I hear?
Say aye if you do.

The ORGAN....

If you test the bass line, there are 4 options.
1. ORGAN: generally I think this is a bit heavy.
2. CONTRABASS: I can't remember which is which but one is a detached bass and the other a legato bass. I generally prefer to use the detach bass line.

Balance: I usually make the hands louder than the legs. Unless there is fancy footwork to show off.

I used to practise my mass ordinaries. It can be quite a distraction to worshippers if the ordinaries are not confidently played. Have gotten some feedback from congregation sitting at the other end of church asking me to work on my playing. I said, OK.
